La Fattoria di Palazzo Vecchio, formerly known as Fattoria di Valiano, is located in the territory of Valiano di Montepulciano, and also includes the wine shop “La Dogana.” In the Renaissance period it was owned by the “Spedale degli Innocenti” [Hospital of the Children] in Florence; then, the farm was purchased in 1837 by Nicola Vegni; later, in the late 70s of the last century, the central nucleus of the farm was bought by Count Riccardo Zorzi, who began to restructure it in 1982 and, in 1990, after an extensive re-planting program of the vineyards, he began to produce the first bottles of Vino Nobile. Strongly linked to the territory, Palazzo Vecchio produces wines that come almost exclusively from local grapes, such as Sangiovese (in its local clone: “Prugnolo Gentile”), Canaiolo Nero and Mammolo, and boasts a modern wine-making system, specifically designed and engineered to optimize the impact of the sun on the vineyards rows. In addition to the Vino Nobile in its three forms (Selezione, Riserva and Annata), the winery also produces Rosso di Montepulciano, Vin Santo and Rosso Cortona. The vineyards of Palazzo Vecchio face south-south-west, and they can count on gentle hilly breezes to keep the grapes healthy in their period of growth and maturation.
